Windsurfing and sailing

Windsurfing is by all means one of the most attractive and most popular summer sports. The wind which has the approximate strength of 3-5 meters per second allows recreation of this type year round. The seasonal school of surf is situated in the Čikat bay.

Sailing – one of the traditional sports, thanks to the long history of maritime traditions. For many years we have been organising the "Regatta of Lošinj" during the first weekend of August and all those that have a sail boat may participate. There is a seasonal sailing school in Čikat bay, and the sailing club from Mali Lošinj organizes the regatta each year

An important segment of the tourist facilities on offer in Kvarner consists of 22 nautical tourism ports, 14 of which are marinas, with a total of 3.004 berths at sea and 1.766 dry berths. The Kvarner marinas are located mostly in the vicinity of hotels and offer the possibility of boat-renting. They are geographically distributed in the northern part of Kvarner (Ičići, Opatija), and on each of the islands (in Punat, Cres, Mali Lošinj, Supetarska Draga and Rab). They are modern, well equipped marinas, among which Marina Punat (the oldest and one of the biggest in Croatia) and ACI marina Ičići (specialized for bigger and more luxurious vessels), stand out in terms of equipment, services and variety of available facilities. The Kvarner navigation facilities are on the very top of the overall Kvarner tourist service and therefore, in addition to all the attractions and variety of the Kvarner shores, islands and their landscapes, it is no surprise that this area is also called “Gate to the Adriatic Yachting Paradise”.

THE SPORT OF SAILBOAT RACING ON LOŠINJ - JUGO SAILING CLUB

The beginnings of sailboat racing on the island of Lošinj are closely related to the naval and shipbuilding tradition and organized tourism.

In the second half of the 19th century the island of Lošinj was one of the major naval and shipbuilding centers of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy with a fleet of over 100 ocean cruising sailboats and many smaller vessels.

Rich families of ship-owners, captains and shipbuilders with their ships and skills could measure up to the owners of luxurious yachts and wooden boats from Vienna, Trieste and Venice who used to visit Lošinj or had villas or weekend houses here, and compete with them in organized regattas. To win a sailboat race, same as today, was a matter of honor and social prestige.

The Jugo Sailing Club was founded in July 1949 and this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.

In November the Lošinj Cup takes place, a very popular regatta for Optimist boats and early in August the traditional Lošinj Sailboat Regatta takes place.
